March 2020, aboard our 40-foot sailing catamaran named Mohini, we arrived in Great Exuma, Bahamas along with several hundred other boats of all shapes and sizes for the annual Spring Regatta. Georgetown is a remote settlement some 200 kilometers southeast of Nassau and our family of four was happily anticipating frolicking in the crystal-clear, turquoise waters and experiencing the warm hospitality of the islands over the following weeks before returning to Canada later that spring.
However, our idyllic adventure took an unexpected turn as fear and uncertainty surrounding Covid-19 began to rise. Concerns grew over the virus potentially escalating into a pandemic, especially given that the local medical center lacked the capacity to treat the influx of tourists. Then, almost without warning, the Bahamian government implemented a quarantine, confining all foreigners to their boats for the foreseeable future.
